Types of folding fans

Hand fans have evolved over time to suit different cultures, purposes, and artistic preferences. Here are some notable types of hand fans:

  1. Folding Fans: These are the most common type of hand fans and consist of a leaf made from various materials attached to a collapsible rib structure. Folding fans can be opened and closed, making them easy to carry and store. They are often elaborately decorated and come in various shapes and sizes.
  2. Brise Fans: Brise fans are folding fans without a leaf. Instead, they have intricately carved and decorated individual ribs that are connected by a ribbon or thread. These fans are known for their artistic craftsmanship and were particularly popular during the 18th century.
  3. Paddle Fans: Paddle fans have a fixed, solid leaf without a collapsible rib structure. They are often made from materials like cardboard, wood, or leather and are relatively simple in design. Paddle fans are typically less decorative than folding fans but can still feature beautiful artwork.
  4. Fixed Fans: Fixed fans are non-collapsible fans with a rigid structure. They can be made from materials like wood, metal, or other solid materials. Fixed fans are often used as decorative items and can be found displayed on walls or as part of interior design.
  5. Feather Fans: Feather fans feature a leaf made from feathers, usually from exotic birds. These fans are valued for their unique texture and vibrant colors. Feather fans were particularly popular during the Art Deco era and continue to be used for special occasions.
  6. Printed Fans: Printed fans have a leaf adorned with designs, patterns, or images that are printed onto the material. These designs can range from delicate floral motifs to intricate scenes, making them visually appealing and versatile.
  7. Advertising Fans: These fans are designed to promote brands, events, or products. They often feature company logos, slogans, or information. Advertising fans have been used as promotional tools for centuries, and they continue to be distributed at various events.
  8. Wedding Fans: Wedding fans are often used as decorative accessories for weddings. They can be customized to match the wedding theme and are sometimes given to guests as favors. These fans can be made from a variety of materials, including paper, silk, or lace.
  9. Vintage and Antique Fans: Collectors and enthusiasts treasure vintage and antique fans that hold historical and artistic value. These fans can come from various time periods and cultures, showcasing the evolution of fan design and craftsmanship.
  10. Artistic Fans: Some hand fans are created as pieces of art, incorporating unconventional materials, avant-garde designs, and experimental techniques. These fans blur the lines between functional accessory and fine art.

Each type of hand fan has its unique characteristics, cultural significance, and historical context. The diversity in styles and purposes reflects the global appreciation for these elegant and versatile accessories.

I was given a very large wall fan, construction is bamboo ribs and blue cotton fabric between the ribs. It’sold and the cotton is soiled. Any suggestions on how to clean this without damaging it?
